Vegas, Baby!

Kevin and I jetted off this weekend for a little spontaneous trip to Las Vegas. Kevin, with his usual deal finding acumen, found incredibly cheap flights, so we could hardly afford not to go.

We started Saturday off with a trip to Hoover Dam.

We brought along our favorite picnic fixin’s and had lunch there (with a few fine feathered friends).

Last night we visited The Neon Museum. If you go to Vegas, you MUST go here (and pay the few dollars extra to go at night). It was incredible!

I also took photos of letters in the boneyard and put this together. I absolutely cannot wait to get it printed and framed.

We had a blast in Vegas this weekend, but after almost three weeks of traveling, we’re ready to settle down until our next big trip in March.

Where have you been lately?

Last December

So what were we up to this December that kept us so busy that we couldn’t blog?

We didn’t go ice skating on the fake ice at Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park, but enjoyed some chess while taking in the the Dallas skyline with some members of our Honeymooners Bible Study group.

Photo-A-Day, Week 3

Happy Friday! I hope you’re enjoying our Photo-A-Day challenge as much as I am! It’s not too late to join in! You can link up below and share your most recent photos!

This week I made a real effort to take photos even if I only had my iPhone with me. I got a few shots I’m really in love with (particularly at the fair), even though I missed a day or two.

What’s your favorite shot this week?

Photo-A-Day: Week 2

This week was much tougher (see week 1 here).  A couple of times I forgot to bring along my “big camera” and had to take iPhone pictures (although it can’t hurt to get better at that either), but I’m really enjoying taking a few minutes each day for myself (and my camera).

Here’s what I came up with this week.

Saturday, October 5Farris Wheel

Photo-A-Day: Week 1

It’s Friday! That’ means it’s time to share our best photos from the Photo-A-Day challenge!

It was a short week, just Tuesday through Thursday, but I still managed to get three pretty awesome shots.

This week, I focused on playing with depth-of-field using my 50mm lens.  Here’s what I came up with!

Fievel Tennis Ball

A Photo-A-Day Challenge

A couple Fridays ago I tossed out the idea of a photo-a-day challenge.  Since entering the Conde Nast Traveler Dream Trip photo contest (see below), I’ve realized that I really, really love taking photos and that I really, really want to get better at it.

Rome Ostia Antica 5

The best way to get better at something is to practice, so I’m embarking on a 31-day challenge to do just that. All October I’ll be toting around my camera, attempting to snap one “share-worthy” photo a day. Each Friday, I’ll be sharing my best photos from that week to keep me honest.  I’m really wanting to focus on composition, lighting, and well, focus.

eifel towerI’m really excited to get started (so much so that I’m probably going to start taking photos this weekend)! If you’d like to join me on this journey, let me now in the comments and we’ll have a link party each Friday to hold each other accountable!

What do you want to improve in your photography? What is your biggest photography weakness (mine’s lighting)? What are you most excited to photograph?

Need some inspiration? Check out the Conde Nast Traveler Dream Trip Finalists here (you can see my submissions by clicking on the “Gallery” tab and searching for @jbeals). Also, check out the National Geographic Photo of the Day for some truly incredible photos.

A Photo-A-Day Idea

Happy Friday, guys!

Today I wanted to pose a question.

Lately, I’ve been pondering doing a photo-a-day challenge – not the fun Instagram ones, but one with my “big camera” to help me develop as a photographer.

20130913-091103.jpgI really want to focus on both composition and learning to fully take advantage of my Canon 60D’s capabilities.

20130913-091354.jpgWould any of you be interested in joining me? I think I’m going to start with a 30-day challenge – one good photo a day for a month.

Let me know if you’re interested in joining me! Have a great weekend!

PS. If this shows up funky, our network is down here at the office and I had to write this post as a replacement on my phone.

Happy Day After the 4th of July!

I hope you’re having a wonderful holiday weekend (and if you’re at work, I’ll have an adult beverage on the beach for you).

We’re still working on the site, so please bear with us.

We’ll be back on Monday with a regular post, but in the meantime all we have for you is a pic of the fireworks from last night on Siesta Key Beach.

Have a great weekend!

Have a wonderful (and safe) Memorial Day weekend!

Europe 2013: Rome – Part 1

We’re slowly but surely starting to settle back into life at the Little House after our whirlwind European tour. This week we’re catching up on laundry, mowing the lawn (it’s a jungle out there), cleaning house, and washing the puppies (they need it).

Since we’re a little light on the DIY this week, we’ll be sharing photos from our recent trip with you today!

Be sure to check out our photos from Munich, Innsbruck, Venice and Florence while you’re here! Today we’re finally at our last stop, Rome. We’ll be posting half the photos now, half after lunch. There were just too many to pare down!Rome St. Paul Outside the Walls 3
