Cocktail of the Week: Cranberry Granita Cosmopolitan

For a while now, Kevin and I have been doing a little thing we call “Cocktail of the Week.” We pick a drink -sometimes a classic like a Gimlet or Old Fashioned, sometimes a concoction all our own- and learn to make it properly. If we don’t have the required ingredients, we run out to our favorite liquor store and buy what we’re missing.

This week, we’re making a Christmas-y drink: a Cranberry Granita Cosmopolitan, adapted from Alton Brown’s recipe. It’s a spin on the classic ladies-night-out staple. Instead of using cranberry cocktail juice, we freeze 100% cranberry juice on a sheet pan, then scrape it to make large, loose, frozen flakes (that’s the granita) and use that as the cranberry in the cocktail. It’s slushy, tart, and waaaaay better than the pale pink things you’ll get at happy hour.

Give it a try! Even the guys can’t resist this one… just ask Kevin.

Cranberry Granita Cosmopolitan Cosmo

Cranberry Granita Cosmopolitan

1 oz. Vodka
0.5 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice (don’t use the bottled stuff, go with real limes!)
2.5 0z. cranberry granita

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a twist of lime. Enjoy!

Yum! This sounds delicious. I will for sure have to try!!! One year for Christmas Eve we made Cosmos and Apple Martinis and for every one you got, you were given a matching red or green bead. It was fun to count how many everyone had after the night was over…ohhhh the days before kiddos :)

Hi, I just found your blog and I’m having good time looking through your archives! What a fun weekly tradition to try a new drink each week. Me and my husband usually stick to the same old Manhattans and Martinis (which we have perfected for sure!), but this looks totally awesome. So festive and how fun with the cranberry granita!
